Challenging Prejudice: The Experience of Disability
25th November 1997
The University of Ulster is offering a new course aimed at confronting and overcoming stereotypes of the disabled in association with the disability equality campaign group Rights Now (NI).
Called 'Challenging Prejudice: The Experience of Disability', the 12-week part-time course has been designed by and will be delivered by disabled people.
Course tutor David McDonald said: "This is an unprecedented opportunity for anyone with an interest in 'disability' to explore issues such as the reality of living with a disability in our society, how attitudes towards the disabled affect their life chances and the debate on genetic engineering. The course will allow participants to gain an understanding of disabled people's demands and for effective enforceable anti-discrimination legislation."
The programme is aimed at professionals working with the disabled, whether in healthcare or in the social policy fields. It will also be of interest and value to the disabled and their families and friends.
The course begins in February 1998 at the University's Jordanstown campus.
