International Experience in Nursing

17th October 1997

It's a long way from Northern Ireland to Africa, Australia and North America but to 29 BSc Honours students in Nursing at the University of Ulster there were many similarities.

The students as part of their course, spent three months abroad, working, studying and learning about the practice of nursing across the globe. Some of the countries visited were Malawi, Uganda, Zambia, Northern Spain, Canada, the United States and Australia. In each of the countries, the students observed the way that culture interacted with the practice of nursing.

The programme has been running for three years as part of the BSc Honours Nursing degree at the University and is designed to give student nurses an insight into the international healthcare system. Said placement co-ordinator, Mr Pat Deeny:

"This programme gives students a global perspective on nursing, especially the way that culture impacts on health and how nurses can facilitate culturally sensitive care.

"We believe that this is an extremely useful programme. The nurses are encouraged to reflect on the provision of health care in and out of the United Kingdom. The sensitivity that they learn will only help them as they begin their career nursing."
