£90,000 Telecommunications Research Project
21st December 1998
Fujitsu Telecommunications Software Ireland has announced details of an extra research investment in Northern Ireland.
The firm is to invest more than £90,000 to extend its development of software solutions for its products.
The announcement was made at the University of Ulster in Coleraine by Fujitsu's General Manager, Nic Stirk. He said the money would go to support two doctoral research students at the province's universities:
"The funding of this research represents a sound business investment. Fujitsu is very conscious of the quality of software engineering research at the universities, and the quality of their graduate.
"That quality has also been the main factor in establishing Fujitsu Telecommunications Software Ireland in the province. We have been impressed with the province's reputation as a centre of excellence for software engineering and are investing heavily in developing bonds with the leading academic institutions in the province."
The research funding has been welcomed by the University of Ulster. Lecturer in Informatics and Software Engineering, Dr Gerard Parr also disclosed plans to develop other research projects between the university and Fujitsu:
"We have been in discussions about the needs of the telecommunications industry here and Fujitsu has said it will support our plans for a new Masters degree in Telecommunications and Distributed Systems."
