£4.5m for University Research

The University of Ulster has announced details of its latest list of research grants, worth £4,465,000.
The grants include more than £0.3 million from the Commission of the European Communities. The sum includes £195,000 for an engineering development project, more than £85,000 for a project to look at the potential of waste disposal sites and more than £56,000 to look at learning in rural areas through libraries.
In all, the University received more than 80 new grants, including £292,000 from the Department of Education for Northern Ireland and the Higher Education Funding Council of England for a project involving teacher training and new technology.
Other grants include:
* more than £195,000 from MTP Limited for a manufacturing-technology partnership;
* around £170,000 from the Department of Trade and Industry and from Ford Motor Company for a Teaching Company Programme;
* almost £160,00 from Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council to look at the performance of solar cells;
* more than £145,000 from the Department of Health to look at the Life and Health Technologies sector in the province;
* almost £50,000 from the British Diabetic Association for work on blood flow and;
* more than £30,000 from the Cancer research campaign for a work on an anti-cancer treatment.
The University also received some funding from donors who wished to remain anonymous. It received one such donation for more than £26,000 for a project to look at the law governing charities in Northern Ireland.
Another anonymous donor provided and more than £25,000 for a project to look at the role of women in the voluntary and community sectors in the North of Ireland in the 19th and 20th centuries.
