Lottery aids Magee College Restoration
4th December 1998
The University of Ulster has received grant aid from the Heritage Lottery Fund of £213,390 towards restoring the stonework of the main building at Magee College, Londonderry. The building, constructed in 1865 in Scottish freestone, has been damaged over the years by water that has penetrated the structure through decaying lead damp proof courses. The grant will support the replacement of the eroding stonework, the main roof, lead valleys and gutters.
Magee College occupies a prominent position in the city, and has a wider civic role than being simply a seat of learning. Architects charged by the University with planning the expansion of the College in 1984 received over a thousand petitions from local people seeking alterations to the plans to conserve the integrity of the existing Gothic building.
The restoration of this important landmark building will cost over £0.5 million in total, and will be undertaken using agreed Department of Environment procedures. Speaking of the work in hand, Magee College Provost Professor Fabian Monds said:
"This project is very much part of our continuing attention to the state of the campus. It demonstrates our commitment to maintaining the fine architectural heritage of Magee College for future generations.
"Magee College plays an important role in the city and it is a landmark both in educational and physical terms."
