New Professors

1st June 1998

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The University of Ulster has announced the promotion of several members of staff as professors - all of them women.

They are: Monica McWilliams as Professor of Women Studies; Pauline Murphy, Professor of Social Inclusion; Denise McAlister, Professor of Health Policy; Dr Mary Chambers, Professor of Mental Health Nursing and Dr Bernadette Hannigan, Professor of Biomedical Sciences.

The appointments place the university above the national average for having professors who are women.

The University's Vice-Chancellor, Professor Lord Smith of Clifton said the awards recognised a range of academic excellence:

"These personal appointments are a recognition of the scholarship and achievements of five widely respected members of our staff.

"I am also pleased to say that they also help to address the national gender imbalance in the senior levels of higher education, endorsing our commitment to equality of opportunity for all."

The Association of University Teachers has recently highlighted what it sees as an issue of equality of opportunity within universities and pointed out that a mere 8% of professors in UK universities are women.
