Scholarship Scheme
29th May 1998
The University of Ulster has received a donation of over £120,000 to provide special scholarships programme for its ten best undergraduate students.
The sum, provided by the Garfield Weston Trust, will be used to support the 'Chancellor's Scholarship Scheme' which will begin in the Autumn.
Final year students viewed as having outstanding ability and varied life experiences will shortly be selected to participate in the scheme. Each scholar will receive a grant of £2,500 and will be required to take a special module of study which will include a European study trip.
The scheme was devised by the University's Vice- Chancellor, Professor Lord Smith of Clifton:
"We hope the scholarships will help give the students a broader perspective than is normally possible in any single course. The extra module of study will give them a chance to consider important issues such as the future of work, ethical dilemmas and conflict resolution.
"The scholarships are open to all our undergraduates but we hope that in the end we get a good cross section from different subject areas - mixing with people from different disciplines is an important aspect of life," he explained.
