Protecting Human Rights
8th May 1998
Senior judicial figures from across the world are due to arrive in Belfast at the weekend for a major five day seminar on human rights.
The seminar comes at a time when human rights issues have been highlighted in the Stormont Agreement, which will be voted on later this month.
Under Strand One of the Agreement, the European Convention of Human Rights and a possible Bill of Rights for Northern Ireland are regarded as one of the 'safeguards' which will operate in conjunction with the proposed Assembly.
The Lord Chief Justice of Northern Ireland, Sir Robert Carswell, will be among those attending the seminar.
Topics to be discussed during the five days will include constitutional arrangements, minority rights, and the role of judges. The University of Ulster is to award an honorary doctorate to the Australian High Court judge, Justice Michael Kirby, later in the week.
The event has been organised by Professor Brice Dickson, School of Public Policy, Economics and Law, University of Ulster.
The seminar is a British Council event.
