Senator Kennedy makes first speech in province

9th January 1998

United States Senator Edward Kennedy is to deliver a special lecture in Londonderry/Derry on Friday on the issue of peace and conflict.

The lecture will form the main feature of the Senator's first ever visit to the Province and will be given for the joint United Nations University/University of Ulster project which carries out research on political conflict throughout the world (INCORE) and is based at Magee College in the city.

The lecture, which will be held at the city's Guildhall, is an annual event in memory of Tip O'Neill, the late speaker of the United States House of Representatives.

The Director of INCORE is Professor Mari Fitzduff:

"The pursuit of peace in a conflict situation is always difficult and we are particularly pleased to welcome Senator Kennedy because he has always played a vital part in American efforts to support the drive for peace here."

The Senator has also been welcomed by the city's Deputy Mayor, Alderman Joe Miller:

"This city has long enjoyed cultural and economic links with the United States and it is a great honour to receive Senator Kennedy for the Tip O'Neill Memorial Lecture."

INCORE (Initiative on Conflict Resolution and Ethnicity) is based at Magee College in the city. It aims to increase understanding of the origins, dynamics and effects of ethnic conflict and to encourage better approaches to conflict management resolution through teaching and research.

INCORE has charitable status with funding from a variety of sources including governmental agencies, the European Union and bodies such as UNESCO.
