News Release

Magee College Provost New BBC NI Governor

23rd July 1999

Professor Fabian Monds, Provost of the University of Ulster's Magee College campus in Derry/Londonderry, has been appointed Governor of the BBC in Northern Ireland.

As Governor, Professor Monds' main role will be to help determine the BBC's strategy and act as a trustee for the public interest.

The appointment, which is for a term of four years, will take effect from August 1, 1999. Professor Monds will succeed Sir Kenneth Bloomfield in the post.

Professor Monds, who is originally from Omagh in County Tyrone, has said he is well aware of the particular challenges the post will hold:

"The BBC has major influence on how individuals and communities perceive local and global events and situations, and how individuals and communities are perceived by others. There are particular challenges in communicating to, from and within Northern Ireland and I hope that I will make a useful contribution as Governor, to the way in which the BBC continues to respond sensitively, imaginatively and honestly to all our needs throughout the Province.

I am especially interested in the knowledge access and information requirements of our region's rural and urban communities, and in the opportunities offered by digital technology which we all have to grasp in this Information Age".
