Building Work to Begin on Job Creation at Magee College

14th September 1999

Magee College has announced it hopes to begin preparation work as early as next week on a major multi-million pound initiative to underpin the developing software and technology industry and international business in the north west.

Magee College has announced it is to begin work on the first phase of what is to become a major part of the region's Science Park and which is on target to bring 200 long term, high quality jobs to the region.

The development of the site is also expected to create a number of short-term jobs in the local building and construction industries.

The first stage in that process is hoped to begin next week when workers move on to the Aberfoyle section of the Magee College campus and begin preparatory work for the International Business Centre and a Software Development Centre.

Provost, Professor Fabian Monds has revealed that the College is at an advanced stage of discussions with potential clients interested in establishing operations in the new buildings.

He believes time is now of the essence and it is critical that the first stage in the development be completed by late Spring next year:

"The economy, and particularly the information technologies, move and develop at an alarming rate. It is essential that the north west not be left behind and that we do not let slip away the good will and business prospects we have harnessed internationally."

"These initiatives were announced six months ago and we have been moving very quickly with all the necessary negotiations. Everyone involved, particularly the Council, has been very supportive of what we are trying to do."

Professor Monds said he those behind the project have been encouraged by the support they have received throughout the community:

"As well as providing facilities which will be essential to make sure the north west economy is not left behind, we are very conscious that we provide something which is a credit to our beautiful city:

"One of our main priorities has been to keep a lot of greenery on the Aberfoyle site and this has involved building into the slope that is there."
