UU Issues Soy Milk Research Appeal

7th December 1999

People living in Japan and other Asian countries suffer much less from diseases such as heart disease, breast cancer and prostate cancer than we do in the UK. It is thought that their high consumption of soy products is an important factor in protecting them against these diseases

The Northern Ireland Centre for Diet and Health (NICHE) at the University of Ulster in Coleraine is conducting a research programme to investigate some of the potentially beneficial natural substances in soy products called phyto-estrogens.

Researchers Leane Hoey and Professor Ian Rowland have a special interest in babies and infants that are, or have been, fed soy-based milk formulas.

They are investigating whether there are differences between children in the way in which they handle these substances in the body and are looking for help from members of the public with the project.

If you have a child that is being fed foods containing soy, especially soy formula milks, and would be prepared to participate in this research programme please call NICHE on 028 7032 3039 for more information
