Americans and Russians to Discuss Forgiveness

22nd April 1999

In a society that has been torn apart by violence, is the main role of justice to help restore normality or to punish the violent: should justice be restorative or retributive?

A group of international speakers are to gather in the north west of the province this weekend to discuss how communities can manage violence and the potential for violence.

The Conference has arisen from a series of talks and discussions at the United States Institute of Peace in Washington.

It will be held at the premises of INCORE - the joint United Nations University and University of Ulster project on conflict resolution - at Magee College.

The conference has attracted many international speakers include those from the American National Security Archive, The Russian Academy, the Institute for Defence Studies and Analysis in New Delhi, the University of Beirut and even the editor of the Poland's largest daily newspaper!

The University of Ulster's Professor of Politics, Paul Arthur, is one of the organisers:

"We will examine the role memory has played in nurturing and shaping conflict and they way in which historical memory and the memory of conflict can be addressed, with special emphasis on forgiveness," he said.
