Teacher Training Conference
25th May 2000
The 31 educational institutions involved in teacher training in Northern Ireland and the Republic have met for the first time.
The event, the Invitational Conference for Teacher Educational Professionals in Ireland, was organized by the University of Ulster and NUI Maynooth and took place in Belfast.
It was addressed by Minister George Howarth of the Department of Education, Northern Ireland and by Minister Mary Hanafin, Minister for Children in the Republic.
The conference also heard from two major international figures in teacher education, Professor Malcolm Skilbeck of Australia and Professor David Imig of the United States of America.
It agreed a range of actions in early childhood education, continuing professional development and education for human rights, pluralism and democracy that would benefit from cross-border research and collaboration between individuals and institutions.
A steering group has been set in place to carry the work forward.
