Police Crowd Management to be Discussed

6th June 2000

With only a matter of weeks before the proposed Drumcree Parade, representatives from the Belgian Police will be speaking about crowd management at a conference this week organized by the University of Ulster at Magee College in Londonderry/Derry.

The issue will be among the themes debated by international experts during the workshops which will be held from today, Tuesday 5 June until Friday, 9 June.

The Public Order, Policing and Managing Ethic Conflict workshop will look at topics such as legal issues and marshalling.

Two senior figures from the Belgian Gendarmerie will present aspects of their work on crowd management and policing.

The workshops will be led by Neil Jarman and Dominic Bryan, who have carried out extensive research on parading in Northern Ireland.

The second series of workshops will look at Psychological Approaches to Ethnic Conflict and Conflict Resolution.

It will look at issues such as the learning of prejudice and the psychology and mobilisation of violence.

Those workshops will be led by Dr Tony Gallagher, Queen’s University, Belfast.

The weeks’ events have been organized by INCORE - the joint University of Ulster United Nations University project on international conflict resolution.
