University Pro-Chancellor Honoured by Queen
21st June 2000
University of Ulster Pro-Chancellor Miss Geraldine Keegan was honoured in this year's Birthday Honours List. She becomes Dame Geraldine Keegan, and will be formally invested with her new title at a Buckingham Palace ceremony later in the year.
Headmistress of St Mary's Secondary School in the Creggan for the past 13 years, Dame Geraldine has served as the University's Pro Chancellor since 1997, and is now halfway through her eight-year term of office.
Asked how she felt about the honour, she said "Thrilled! I couldn't believe it when I heard the news. I honestly though someone had made a mistake. But the honour is not really about me alone: it's much more a recognition of the great work that's been done by everyone here in this school."
Before becoming headmistress of St Mary’s, Dame Geraldine was a senior lecturer in Educational Psychology in St Mary’s College, Belfast, and was Deputy Director of the Centre for Education Management.
