Step up Information Evening at Magee College

The University of Ulster's unique ‘Step up’ scheme is holding an information evening at Magee College on Thursday 7 September for the pupils (and parents) who have been successful in obtaining a place on the scheme.
The information evening will be attended by parents and their sons/
daughters, academics from the university, principals and teachers from the participating schools, health professionals and local industrialists who will be contributing to the scheme.
The evening will begin at 7.30pm with a welcome by Professor Richard Barnett, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Teaching and Learning followed by an address by Professor Bernie Hannigan, Dean of the Faculty of Science.
The evening will continue with a short presentation on the scheme by the ‘Step up’ Director, Dr Damian O’Kane and expressions of support from Mr Roy Ferguson (Coolkeeragh Power) and Mr Sean Ferguson (NIE). Starting a unique scheme which aims to provide an opportunity for pupils from nine secondary schools in Londonderry/Derry to gain entry to and complete degree level study at the University of Ulster.
The ‘Step up’ scheme is aimed at pupils who have low attainment levels and relatively low expectations. The selected students will undertake the Advanced GNVQ Science award which will be taught within their own school, at the University of Ulster, in industry and in the local hospitals.
Pupils will also attend an intensive residential Science Summer school at the University of Ulster, which will be delivered by a wide range of staff from the Faculty of Science and will reflect nationally and internationally recognised expertise in teaching and learning and research.
The scheme which was officially launched on the Magee College campus in March 2000.
