Spanish Steps and Flamenco Rhythms at Magee College

4th October 2000

The University of Ulster and the Classical Music Society have joined forces to bring an exciting series of arts and music events to the north-west this autumn.

And this month Magee College will be the scene for a series of Guitar Plus Concerts, featuring some of the finest six-string talent ever seen in the city.

The series kicks off in spectacular style on the evening of the 26th in Magee College's Great Hall with Spain's Juan Martin, playing a programme of flamenco dances from his homeland. Juan is joined by singer Antonio Aparecida, and dancers Salvador Moreno and fiery Raquel de Luna. Moreno is nicknamed El Tigre for the fire and grace of his dancing.

The Guitar Plus Series is sponsored by Diamond Corrugated Cases Ltd, who are no strangers to the Arts having won an award at the last Arts & Business Awards ceremony. The Guitar Plus Series blends flamenco, jazz and classical music in an unparalleled autumn concert programme with artists of outstanding calibre.

The Magee College campus has been used regularly as a concert venue over the years and the University of Ulster is now actively exploring ways in which it can use its resources to enhance cultural activity in the local area.

Chairperson of the Classical Music Society, Mrs Carita Kerr said, “Many people will fondly remember the beginnings of the Classical Music Society as Music at Magee College when the Great Hall in Magee College was the home for many enjoyable evenings. This new partnership is an exciting development for both organisations, marking a new phase of music development for the north-west.”

University of Ulster Arts Development Officer Kate Bond paid tribute to sponsors Diamond Corrugated Cases, without whose help and support this stimulating and groundbreaking programme of music and dance could not have been realised.

“We are delighted to have the support of Diamond Corrugated Cases Ltd for this innovative concert series. Such sponsorship is vitally important in ensuring the development of arts events to be enjoyed by the local community,” she said.
