Major European Environmental Conference Heads for Belfast

12th October 2000

Belfast's Laganside is set to be the focus of international attention as the University of Ulster convenes a major European conference on engineering design from 15-18 November 2000.

A key focus is the radical re-engineering of Belfast's river environment, which has transformed the Lagan's quays and banks from an ugly industrial backwater to an urban showcase for the 21st century.

Leading academics and engineers from across Europe will jet into the city for the Entrée 2000 Conference, where they will be given detailed briefings on the urban regeneration and the transformation of Belfast from a peripheral Victorian city into a modern regional economic powerhouse.

Over 30 papers will be delivered to an audience of up to 100 delegates from over 12 European nations.

Delegates will see how innovative engineering solutions like the Lagan Weir can provide regeneration with sustainability.

Delegates will also see other innovative Northern Ireland engineering developments, including the recently transformed Mossley Mill complex, now the HQ of Newtownabbey Borough Council, and the Ballymena Environmental Centre of Sustainability (ECOS) - a newly developed £11m Centre showcasing contemporary techniques in renewable energy engineering.

It is the first time this prestigious European conference has been held in Ireland. Organizer Alan Strong, senior lecturer in Environmental Engineering, at the University of Ulster's School of the Built Environment said: “This is the tenth year of the Conference- and therefore an important anniversary and it's a real feather in our cap to be hosting it here at the University of Ulster. It puts Northern Ireland and the University of Ulster firmly on the map as centres of European environmental engineering excellence.”
