Guinness Northern Ireland and the University of Ulster have teamed up to award the coveted title of University of Ulster Sports Scholar to 20 of Northern Ireland’s finest young elite athletes.
Mr Stephen Martin, Deputy Chief Executive of the British Olympic Association was guest of honour at this year's ceremony.
This year, the awards span athletes representing 13 different sports, from soccer through GAA, camogie and netball to table tennis and trampolining. Many are Irish internationals in their chosen sports.
The scheme is designed to help sports scholars to realise their full potential and to balance the demands of their academic work with the requirements of top level sport. The scholarship includes a range of benefits for students at the University of Ulster.
Philip Carson, Acting Director of Sport and Recreation, University of Ulster, added: “The scheme has been an outstanding success over the past three years of operation. Sportsmen and women from the University of Ulster have achieved considerable success both in their sport and in terms of their academic achievements. It has been an excellent partnership between the University and Guinness and one which has supported over 70 top class sports scholars.”
Guinness Northern Ireland spokesperson Ken Morrison said:
“Guinness is proud to support the UU scholarships which promote the achievement of both sporting and academic excellence. The dedication and commitment of these young people highlight their determination to achieve sporting success, which will have a very positive impact on both the economic and social future for all of Northern Ireland.”
