University of Ulster Reveals New 'Cineversity' Programme

21st November 2000

The University of Ulster has just announced full details of Cineversity, an exciting new programme of film and film related events centred on the theme of world cinema.

This year’s programme, Film 2000: World Cinema, sees a combination of events including screenings, discussions and workshops organized in partnership with a range of organisations including Amnesty International, the One World Centre, Foyle Film Festival, the Northern Ireland Film Commission, Oxfam and Cinemagic.

Cineversity will provide a lively forum for those interested in cinema, with the focus this year on global themes which promote the celebration of cultural diversity. This emphasis reflects the growth of interest in issues of cultural diversity and the community’s increasing awareness in matters of equality and human rights.

The core of this year’s events will take place from 1st – 5th December with events taking place in a number of venues in and around Belfast including the University of Ulster at Jordanstown, Queen’s Film Theatre, UCG Cinemas (Dublin Road) and the BBC Blackstaff Studio.

Highlights this year include a screening of the fast-paced cops and robbers film, ‘Third World Cop’ – the highest grossing film in Jamaican history; the Ireland premiere of ‘What’s Cooking?’, a hilarious film that celebrates America’s diversity around a Thanksgiving dinner table; a screening of the award-winning hit of the 1998 Cannes film festival, ‘La Vie Revee des Anges’ and a seminar focussing on the celebrated documentary, ‘Bitter Paradise: The Sell-Out of East Timor’.

Paul Hainsworth, Chair of the Cineversity Committee said “The Cineversity programme aims to offer quality opportunities for exploring a range of topical issues through the medium of film. Key elements of our approach are outreach, partnership and debate, with the aim of contributing to wider cultural understanding and awareness in the community at large.”

Kate Bond, Arts Development Officer with the University of Ulster commented: “While some of this year’s events deal with very serious issues, it is always the priority to programme engaging films of the highest standard which will appeal to a wide range of people. We have some extremely funny films on offer, one with vibrant reggae music and also the classic Irish film, ‘The Commitments’ – definitely something for everyone!”

Further information is available on the programme.
