UU Nurse Scholars Scoop All Ireland Fellowships

6th December 2000

University of Ulster scholars have been awarded a total of £116,000 to conduct research into issues facing Ireland's nursing profession.

Of the 14 All-Ireland Nursing Research Fellowships awarded in 2000, nine were awarded to University of Ulster scholars.

The topics and practices that will come under the microscrope range from a probe into the quality of life of those suffering from HIV, through men's experience of testicular cancer and its treatment, to the use of side rails in caring for the elderly.

This is the second year of the Fellowship Awards. Of the 27 Fellowships awarded so far, 19 have come to Northern Ireland and 16 have been awarded to the University of Ulster.

Professor Hugh McKenna, who heads the University of Ulster's School of Health Sciences said:

“Obtaining these Nursing Research Fellowships is a great honour for the University of Ulster and we would like to thank the Nursing Boards for making this funding available. Our success illustrates the vibrant research culture that exists with UU and the quality of support offered here to nurse researchers. It demonstrates the leading role the University plays in nursing education and research in Ireland and internationally.”
