Scholarships for Mature Students at UU
6th August 2001
The University of Ulster is offering scholarships of £2,000 a year to
mature students who feel they can make a difference to the economic or
social life of Northern Ireland.
The Garfield Weston Scholarships are open to students aged 21 years or
over studying for honours degrees in Engineering, Science, Mathematics
and Computing.
Up to five scholarships will be awarded annually and selection will be
based on essays written by the students. In their essays ñ each
containing a maximum of 2,500 words ñ the students will have to outline
how they feel completion of their course will help them to contribute to
the economic and/or social development of Northern Ireland.
The selection panel, comprising one lay member of the University Council
and one senior academic from the relevant faculty, may also choose to
interview applicants.
Professor Richard Barnett, Pro-Vice-Chancellor Teaching and Learning,
said: "The aim of the scholarships is to encourage and facilitate
high-calibre mature students to study full-time for honours degrees in
Engineering, Science, Mathematics and Computing".
Applicants must be aged 21 or over on October 1 in the year which they
begin studying at the University of Ulster. There is no upper age limit.
They must apply for entry to the programme of study in the normal way
and must firmly accept the offer by May 31 in the academic year prior to
beginning their studies. They will be informed of the outcome of their
application for a scholarship by July 31.
The scholarships will be paid in two equal instalments each academic
year. If the course of study includes a period of paid placement, the
scholarship will be payable only for the University-based period of
study.
