UU Leads the Way For Renewable Energy

10th September 2001

The world's leading experts in renewable energy will come together in Belfast's W5, at the Odyssey today for the Biennial Conference of the Solar Energy Society.

The conference, which has been organized by the University of Ulster, will be the largest ever gathering of renewable energy experts on the island of Ireland and the first ever event dedicated solely to renewable energy.

The two-day event will see top academics from Denmark, New Zealand, Russia, France, India, the UK and Ireland sharing developments and revealing new ways of effectively and efficiently harnessing renewable energy sources to meet the energy demands of modern society.

Steve Lo, from the University of Ulster will be delivering a paper on a solar water heater that could be effectively used in every home in Ireland, saving valuable resources and costing only a fraction of the price of conventional methods.

"This conference of the Solar Energy Society is a crucial landmark in developing a renewable energy community in both Northern Ireland and across the island of Ireland," said Professor Brian Norton, event organizer and Dean of Engineering and Built Environment at the University of Ulster.

"Having a strong local renewable energy industry providing employment, economic development and environmental gains is possible here in Northern Ireland. The knowledge gained and the links made during the conference will help make this a reality."
