Open Days at the University of Ulster
11th September 2001
Up to 8,000 sixth formers from all over Ireland are expected to descend on the University of Ulster over the next three days to learn about university life.
The pupils will be taking part in the University’s Open Days on Tuesday 11th, Wednesday 12th and Thursday 13th at which they will be given information on the wide range of 170-plus courses available at the four campuses at Jordanstown, Belfast, Magee and Coleraine.
Faculty staff will be on hand to give general talks and individual advice on courses. The sixth formers will also be able to chat to current students on a wide range of issues relating to university life.
The Open Days, starting each day at 10am and lasting for around four hours, will also give the prospective students an opportunity to see the University’s facilities. Tours have been arranged of the on-site accommodation, the state-of-the-art library and the Sports Centre with its excellent facilities including out-door pitches, tennis courts, indoor swimming pool and fitness suite. The pupils will even be able to test their own physical fitness.
The Students’ Union President and Officers will be on hand to explain the intricacies of student life and to introduce the pupils to the main clubs and societies which operate in the University.
Around 150 schools from Northern Ireland and the border counties of the Republic are expected to take part in the Open Days.
Dr Tony Barnhill, Head of Student Recruitment, said: "We are especially glad to welcome such large numbers of students to the Jordanstown campus over the next three days as planned Open Days at the Magee and Coleraine campuses earlier in the year had to be cancelled due to the foot and mouth crisis. Following Government advice we were unable to bring visitors to the campuses at that time. We will be endeavouring to give the pupils who come to Jordanstown an overview of what the University of Ulster as a whole has to offer them should they choose to come here to study."
