UU Short Listed for University of the Year
17th September 2001
The University of Ulster has been short listed for The Sunday Times University of the Year Award 2001.
The University of Ulster was short listed with five others for the prestigious award of University of The Year. Ulster was highly praised and, said The Sunday Times “Already the largest university in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, it also intends to be the best”.
Using categories such as Teaching Quality; Research Quality; Qualifications for Entry; Academic Achievements of Graduates; employment destinations of Graduates; and resources and facilities, 123 universities were reviewed for their performance. The review also assessed what The Sunday Times refers to as “The institution's role on the national and international academic stage”.
Since the appointment of Professor Gerry McKenna as Vice-Chancellor in 1999, the University has restructured its faculty, school and non-teaching structure. There has also been major investment in its research programme and each course is being evaluated in the context of the new employment opportunities being made available by established and emerging industries.
“Our objective” said, Professor McKenna is “To provide Northern Ireland with the university it deserves to meet the challenges of the first decade of the new century”.
Professor McKenna added: “On behalf of each member of staff and each student, I am delighted at this recognition of the University's commitment to excellence. We have now established a platform from which we can go on to achieve our very ambitious objectives for the University and the community we serve in Northern Ireland.”
