News Release

UU students in Holyland clean-up

27th September 2001

Students from the University of Ulster will be taking to the streets of the Holyland next week in a bid to make Belfast a cleaner place to live.

The Angel Network is a group of students from the University of Ulster and QUB who are volunteering on local projects to help build relationships between students and local communities.

And one of the first of these initiatives will take place on Wednesday, 3 October when eager participants will be undertaking a massive clean-up campaign in the Agincourt Avenue area.

During the coming months the Angel Network will be placing students in community projects and schools all over Belfast.

Another initiative will involve students spending time in St Vincent’s School on the Woodstock Road with children who have emotional or behavioral difficulties, giving them individual attention and guiding them in projects such as Christmas card design.

Community Liaison Officer for the University of Ulster Anne Monaghan said:

“This volunteering scheme will provide students with valuable experience which will help them in their future careers.

“Students do care about their community and the fact that students are willing to give their free time to help with a clean-up in the Holyland area and in other community projects testifies to this.”
