University of Ulster reveals new ‘Cineversity’ programme

24th October 2001

The University of Ulster has just announced full details of the second annual Cineversity programme of film and film related events centred on the theme of Cinema and the City.

This year’s programme, ‘Film 2001: Cinema and The City’, sees a combination of events including screenings, discussions and workshops organised in partnership with a range of organisations including Amnesty International, the One World Centre, Foyle Film Festival, the Northern Ireland Film Commission, British Film Institute and Cinemagic.

Cineversity will provide a lively forum for those interested in cinema, with the focus this year on city themes, which promote the celebration of cultural diversity. This emphasis reflects the growth of interest in issues of cultural diversity and the community’s increasing awareness in matters of equality and human rights.

The core of this year’s events will take place from Ocotober 1st – December 6th with events taking place in a number of venues in and around Belfast including the University of Ulster at Jordanstown, Queen’s Film Theatre, The Warner Village Cinema in the Odyssey Arena and Queen’s University, Belfast.

Highlights this year include a screening of the acclaimed ‘street’ film, Boyz N The Hood. Also included are screenings of Kanchenjunga and Mahanagar from the celebrated Indian director Satyajit Ray. As well as a wide range of films there will also be various seminars discussing as hotly debated topics as ‘Eliminating World Poverty’

Paul Hainsworth, Chair of the Cineversity Committee said: “The Cineversity programme aims to offer quality opportunities for exploring a range of topical issues through the medium of film. Key elements of our approach are outreach, partnership and debate, with the aim of contributing to wider cultural understanding and awareness in the community at large”.

Kate Bond, Arts Development Officer with the University of Ulster added: “While some of this year’s events deal with very serious issues, it is always the priority to programme engaging films of the highest standard which will appeal to a wide range of people. We have some extremely funny films on offer, such as the Northern Ireland based comedy/romance Mad About Mambo – definitely something for everyone”.

The University of Ulster previously organised four very successful film weekends between 1989 and 1995 on varying themes including Cinema and Europe, Pictures of Youth and The Family.

At the University of Ulster at Jordanstown, there was lecture on Fritz Lang’s Metropolis on 18th October and on 19th October at QFT, there is a screening of Code Unknown in association with the Multi-Cultural Resource Centre, Northern Ireland.

Cineversity is supported by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, the Goethe-Institut, and Manchester and is diversity 21 event, one of a series of programmes and events that recognise and celebrate diversity in Northern Ireland.
