NUI Honours UU Vice-Chancellor

Professor Gerry McKenna, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ulster, was this week honoured by the National University of Ireland through the award of an honorary degree of Doctor of Science.
The degree was conferred by the NUI Chancellor, Dr Garret FitzGerald at a ceremony held in St. Patrick's Hall, Dublin Castle.
Professor McKenna is the first Ulster-born Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ulster. He is a biomedical scientist, and has held visiting Professorships in the University of Malaya, and the University of California at Berkeley. He is currently Chairman of HEFCE's 2001 RAE Panel 11 - Other Studies and
Professions Allied to Medicine, and has published extensively in his specialist field of DNA repair and mutagenesis.
Honorary degrees were also conferred on His Eminence Cardinal Desmond Connell, Chancellor of the University of Limerick Miriam Hederman O’Brien, and former Tainaiste John Wilson.
