£2m Boost for Biomedical Research at University of Ulster
7th November 2001
The University of Ulster has received over £2m in grant funding to support its programme of leading edge biomedical research.
The grant funding will enable scientists and researchers at the University to move forward on ground-breaking biomedical studies.
The £2m funding award is made up of 14 research projects and 1 research studentship.
Dr Yvonne Barnett, Head of the University's School of Biomedical Sciences said, “Funding at this level is a real vote of confidence in the quality of the research work that we are undertaking here at the University of Ulster.
“Medical charities, the Department of Health, Research Councils and other funding agencies recognise the quality of our scientific teams and the results that they produce. We may be at the edge of Europe, but we're at the heart of its biomedical research.
“This substantial grant funding will enable scientists working at the University in the biomedical sciences to continue to develop their pioneering research into the causes of cancer and diabetes, and to make further progress in investigating the relationship between diet and health.
“The funding will also provide salary support for a number of new scientific researcher positions and will also support the training of research students.
“The outcomes of these extensive research programmes will undoubtedly have a long term impact on practices associated with healthcare and health promotion.”
