UU Students Become Mentors for Young Adults

13th November 2001

Students from the University of Ulster’s Belfast campus will be taking the initiative this week by becoming mentors for local teenagers who have emotional and behavioural difficulties.

Ruth Huddleston and Ruairi O’Neill will be the first pair of student mentors in St Vincent’s Secondary School on the Ravenhill Road and their initial project will involve assisting the young people in Christmas card design.

The initiative, which has been organized by the University’s Community Liaison Officer, Anne Monaghan, aims to utilize the skills of the students to benefit the pupils.

“This is about bringing the University into the community,” explains Anne.

“We hope that more students will follow suit. The University of Ulster is very aware of our links with local communities and we aim to build on our relationships with them.”

Mr Brian Davey, Principal of St Vincent’s said:

“We are delighted to be working with the University of Ulster and believe this partnership and the sharing of the student’s skills with our pupils will help build self-esteem within them and enrich the curriculum here at St Vincent’s.”

The mentor initiative will take place at 1.30pm on Wednesday 14th November at St Vincent’s Secondary School.
