UU Academic influences top policy makers

15th November 2001

Lifelong learning is on the agenda for a top Magee academic. Damian O’Kane, Director of the University of Ulster’s Step Up programme, will be speaking at a presigious two-day seminar in the University of Cambridge, which aims to influence government policy on Lifelong Learning.

The seminar, which will be attended by Margaret Hodge, Minister of State for Higher Education, and a handful of keynote speakers, will examine the sucesses and failures of the Lifelong learning agenda in Higher Education over the Labour Government’s term in office and seek to influence future policy.

"I am delighted to have been asked to contribute to this special invite conference, which aims to provide advice and guidance to the Labour government in relation to future educational policy,” Damian said.

“This is an opportunity not only to influence national policy on the mainland, but also
to contribute to the development of a comprehensive lifelong learning
strategy for Northern Ireland.

“I have no doubt that the lessons emerging from the mainland will help to inform this development and clearly demonstrate the pivotal role that higher education institutions will play in the social, economic and community development of our society."

The seminar will take place on 15th and 16th November 2001
