UU Partnership Gains National Recognition
21st December 2001
A partnership project between Derry-based firm NuPrint and the University of Ulster has won a top UK business award.
The project received the accolade at the national Teaching Company Scheme (TCS) awards held in London last week. It was chosen from over 1,000 entries.
TCS brings universities and local companies together in a bid to develop technology and staff through training and technology transfer.
This is the second year in succession that a University of Ulster project has won the prestigious award.
NuPrint, a clothing label manufacturer, has been transformed into a global player through the implementation of a Management Information System. The business has grown by 65% and exports to countries such as Malaysia and Mauritius now account for 40% of turnover.
University of Ulster Computing Science graduate, Catriona Strain, teamed up with the company in 1999 as part of a two year TCS programme and helped transform NuPrint to take advantage of e-commerce technology to communicate directly with customers and suppliers.
Catriona was also chosen as one of the top academics in the UK TCS programme this year.
Professor Terri Scott who initiated the programme said: "This programme demonstrates what can be achieved when there is a commitment to progress and innovation."
"The University of Ulster has a track record of success in TCS and has become one of the leading participants in its national programme. The scheme aims to improve competitiveness of the industrial partner whilst increasing the business relevance of the university’s activities."
Last week ten companies were also presented with awards at a special ceremony in Jordanstown in recognition of their success in completing a TCS programme this year.
