UU Supports Get Home Safe Campaign
3rd October 2002
The University of Ulster today pledged its support for a new initiative aimed at tackling the growing problem of alcohol related violence in South Belfast.
The Get Home Safe Campaign, launched by the PSNI this morning, brings together key agencies and organisations instrumental in reducing alcohol related assaults including Belfast City Council, Belfast Vintners, Victim Support, The University of Ulster and Queen’s University, Belfast.
The UU will be taking an active role in the programme by distributing leaflets to students and displaying posters in key locations on campus.
Speaking after the launch, Community Liaison Officer Anne Monaghan said: “This initiative is a step in the right direction in the bid to make students aware of the importance of keeping safe while they are enjoying university life.
“Over the next academic year the University will be relaying the Get Home Safe message to students. We will be emphasizing key points such as not walking home alone at night, not leaving drinks unattended, and being aware of the dangers that exist living in urban areas.
“The University has been working closely with the PSNI over the past number of years on student and resident issues in South Belfast. One of the ongoing matters has been that of student safety and we are pleased to be a part of this new initiative.
Student Union Overall President Jason McGowan said: “I would urge students never to take their personal safety for granted. Some people have a "it will never happen to me" attitude. However all young people should take prudent steps to protect themselves from risk.”
