3rd October 2002

Professor David Bamford, Head of the School of Sociology and Applied Social Studies, has been appointed to chair a major review of mental health policy and legislation.

The review will involve a comprehensive evaluation of the Mental Health Order (Northern Ireland) 1986, and will take account of recent policy developments here and in the European Union. It will address how best to provide services to people with a mental illness in accordance with our statutory equality and human rights obligations, and to promote their social inclusion.

Announcing the new chair, Health Minister Bairbre de Brun said: “I am pleased to have secured the services of Professor Bamford to lead this important task and grateful to the University of Ulster for agreeing to release him to carry this out. I look forward to seeing the report in due course.

Professor Bamford originally trained as a psychiatric social worker at the University of Leeds. He is also an Honorary Professor at the University of Transylvania in Romania and is Chair of the Northern Ireland Association for Mental Health.
