Knowledge Club Presents: Commercialise or Perish

9th October 2002

Strengthening links between Universities and the Business community is essential to facilitate economic regeneration and the development of ideas. This is a key belief of the University of Ulster’s Knowledge Club, an innovative programme designed to encourage cooperation between the two sectors.

This week guests at a special lecture on the Jordanstown campus entitled Commercialise or Perish organised by the Office of Innovation and Enterprise in conjunction with Professor John Anderson, the University's National Business Fellow, heard how one Australian Businessman combined academic research and industry with great success.

Peter Taylor, Chief Executive of Mondo Medical, took his experience of scientific techniques, developed in an academic and research environment, into the marketplace. Mondo Medical, set up in 1996, was named Victorian Government start-up company of the year.

The company was originally established in 1996 to bring to the market outstanding science that had been developed jointly between Melbourne University and The Royal Melbourne Hospital. The Mondo Medical objective is to further research and development objectives by commercialising their scientific discoveries particularly in the area of medical instruments and devices.
