New Technology Opens Up PC World To Disabled

11th November 2002

Researchers at the University of Ulster have developed new technology that could revolutionize the quality of life for the disabled.

The Look Device allows individuals with severe physical impairments to control the operation of a computer cursor solely with the movement of their eyes.

A set of customised spectacles, with built in sensors, enables the wearer to move a PC pointer using only eye movement.

The new technology allows disabled people to enjoy the infinite possibilities offered by the PC environment - web browsing, document writing, e-mail, spreadsheets, music and multimedia.

Jesus Lopez, the technology concept founder and the Look Device designer, said: “As eye movement alone drives the device, its application is suitable for almost any level of neural motor capacity”.

Research team leader, Dr Chris Nugent said: “We hope that the Look Device will help advance the quality of life for individuals who cannot access computer technology through regular interfaces. There is a need for alternative means of accessing PC’s for people who cannot use a keyboard and/or mouse and this new technology can do this.

“It will open up a world of possibilities from both an employment and recreational aspect, to individuals who could not previously operate a computer due to physical impairment.”
