UU Signs Research Pact With University Of Maryland

25th November 2002

A delegation of senior staff from the University, led by the Vice-Chancellor will today sign a research and development agreement with the University of Maryland, College Park, USA.

The Memorandum of Understanding commits both institutions to working together to drive forward research partnerships in biomedical science and health technology.

News of the partnership comes just days after the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Gerry McKenna was appointed to a high-powered US-Ireland Research and Development Task Force by Tommy Thompson, US Secretary of State for Health and Human Services which was established following the Investment summit held in Washington in September.

Core activities of the UU-Maryland partnership include:
  • Exchange of faculty and students for research, teaching and study
  • Exchange of scholarly publications and other information in areas of interest to both parties, including library collections and services;
  • Joint research activities in the areas of biotechnology and health;
  • Exchange of scholars for seminars, conferences and other academic meetings.
The link with the University of Maryland builds on relationships established at the recent 12th Annual Flax Trust Ball, at which Professor McKenna was honoured along with US Secretary for Health and Human Services Tommy Thompson.
