The Red Cross is set to make a valuable contribution to the Magee campus today with a presentation that celebrates 40 years of the organisation in the city.

Lady Aileen McCorkell, founder of the Red Cross in Derry, will donate a spiral-bound collection of letters, cuttings and reports, which offer an insight into the political, social and humanitarian issues of the time.

There are personal accounts of first aid under conflict from Bloody Sunday to the Omagh Bombing.

The bound collection will be showcased in the Irish Room of the new Learning Resource Centre (LRC) at the campus, when it opens in 2003.

Speaking at the presentation Provost of the Magee campus, Professor Tom Fraser said: “We are delighted to accept this valuable collection of materials from the Red Cross. It will make an important contribution to the new library facilities at Magee.

“The documents highlight the wonderful work that the Red Cross has undertaken in Derry since it was established here by Lady McCorkell 40 years ago. They will be of use not only to students but to the community as a whole, in tracing the historic development of the city.”

Lady Aileen McCorkell said: “I am very glad that these papers have found a place here at Magee and I’m very grateful to the university. I hope that future generations will find the materials useful as they shed much light on the economic, social and political situation since the 1960s.”

Terry Duffy, history lecturer at Magee and Vice-President of the local Red Cross branch, said that the papers would “add richly to the materials we have on the Red Cross and give our existing collections a local flavour”.

The presentation is one of a series of events organised by the Red Cross this week to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Red Cross in Derry.
