2nd December 2002
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Gerry McKenna, was this week honoured at Harvard University.
He was Guest of Honour at a black-tie dinner hosted by the Friends of Harvard Celtic Studies Group.
The Vice-Chancellor was chosen for this prestigious accolade because of his work in supporting Celtic scholarship at the University of Ulster and his commitment to the cultures of Northern Ireland.
The honour was bestowed in recognition of the University’s leadership in outreach efforts in at-risk areas of Northern Ireland.
Professor McKenna said: “It is a pleasure - and a deeply satisfying one - to be honoured in this way by so distinguished a body of scholars.”
Previous recipients of the award include: 2001 - William M Bulger, President of the University of Massachusetts; 2000 - Orla O’Hanrahan, Irish Consul General.
The University of Ulster attained a 5* rating in research in Celtic Studies in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise, this being the highest possible rating awarded in this Exercise and in teaching achieved the highest possible score in the national teaching quality assessment. It is one of the key areas for teaching, research and outreach for the University of Ulster.
