UU Teams Up with UK’s E-University to Advance Global Online Learning

The University of Ulster is to provide five web-based degree programme in partnership with UKeU, the UK government-backed company set up to provide online degrees from UK universities to students worldwide.

The courses, which are all successful existing online programmes, include a leading postgraduate Diploma/MSc in Biomedical Sciences and four additional courses focussing on environmental management: Postgraduate Diploma/Msc degrees covering Environmental Toxicology and Pollution Monitoring, Coastal Zone Management, Energy Management, and Renewable Energy.

Professor Gerry McKenna, Vice-Chancellor of the University, said that the University "aims to be recognised as one of the leaders in global online course delivery".

"Now that communications technology has removed the physical barriers, a progressive and forward looking regional university can compete in the international higher education marketplace on equal terms. Our success has been based upon a willingness to innovate and the ability to identify and meet a need for high quality courses".

John Beaumont, chief executive of UKeU said, "We are delighted to be working with the University of Ulster which has been a successful early adopter of eLearning. This agreement extends UKeU's partner universities into Northern Ireland by allowing us to offer a range of established eLearning courses. Significantly, the University of Ulster has given UKeU a firm commitment to move the courses from their existing eLearning platform, WebCT, over to UKeU's eLearning platform by January 2004.
