20th December 2002

The University of Ulster has teamed up with the UK's eUniversity, the Royal College of Nursing (RCN), City University, and the University of Leicester in a UK Healthcare Education Partnership to deliver a portfolio of online learning programmes for healthcare professionals.

The Partnership aims to transform healthcare education in the UK. Working with UKeU, the government-backed company set up to provide online degrees from UK universities, it will draw together the academic, technological and professional expertise needed to develop, deliver and support high quality, online learning for healthcare professionals. UKeU and the Partnership will also look to exploit international opportunities. The eLearning healthcare programmes will run on UKeU’s eLearning platform.

Professor Clive Mulholland, Professor of Technology Enhanced Learning at UU, said "This exciting development will enhance educational opportunities for healthcare workers and improve access to world leading education.

"The first of an extensive portfolio of online courses will be launched in September 2003. This reinforces the University of Ulster's position as a leader in online learning and demonstrates how we can compete effectively in a global education market"

John Beaumont, Chief Executive of UKeU said, “We are delighted to be working with the RCN and City, Leicester and Ulster universities which have formed the UK Healthcare Education Partnership. This is an exciting and important initiative, and a true partnership. The online learning opportunities which the Partnership are developing will provide an ideal vehicle for those working in healthcare to achieve professional and academic excellence. I believe UKeU’s technological solutions, operational service and support, and understanding of eLearning will make a real contribution to the Partnership’s success.”

Chair of the Partnership and RCN Executive Director for Nursing, Alison Kitson said, “This is fantastic news. We believe this project is at the cutting edge of learning and professional development. Our vision is to broaden and deepen access to learning for healthcare professionals and through that make a difference to patient care.”
