UU in Biomedical Research Partnership with Leading Japanese Universities
10th December 2003

L-R: Dr Michael Norton (Secretary of Science and Technology, British Embassy, Tokyo, Japan), Professor Kenji Nakaaki (Chair of the Graduate School, Azabu University), Professor Motoo Masuda (School of Environmental Health Sciences, Azabu University), Professor Kawakami, Dr John Moore (Belfast City Hospital) and Dr Colm Lowery (University of Ulster Coleraine, School of Biomedical Sciences)
Hard on the heels of last week's developments in China comes news of exciting biomedical science links with researchers in Japan.
Dr Colm Lowery, of the School of Biomedical Science, is working with top Japanese scientists in finding ways to combat cryptosporidiosis, campylobacteriosis and botulism in human and animals.
Together, University of Ulster and Japanese researchers at Azabu University and Tokyo University of Fisheries are investigating new molecular methods for the improved detection of these three disease types, employing state of the art real time and DNA fingerprinting techniques in order to establish early warning detection systems for the potentially deadly diseases.
Dr Lowery said: "This exciting new research linkup is the fruit of six months of exploratory work. The first phase of the research partnership will be to establish an international postdoctoral/student exchange programme with these institutes, and to jointly embark on a research programme of meaningful science."
