Magee Soccer Team Has Collingwood Cup In Its Sights
15th December 2003

Magee’s soccer team is looking forward to the Collingwood Cup, the premier inter-varsities football championship, following a stirring effort in the Irish Colleges League Cup competition.
The Collingwood Cup starts on February 4 and the Magee lads are among the favourites to lift the title after their heroics in the League Cup final.
They lost, but only after extra time and having a man sent off, against University of Cork who have lifted the Collingwood Cup for each of the past two seasons.
In a tensely fought contest Magee took the lead in the fifth minute through a tremendous strike from the in-form Kevin Duffy. Cork equalized midway through the first half but thereafter Magee dominated the game only to see Shane McCabe sent off in the 90th minute for a second yellow card offence.
They held out for the first period of extra time until tiredness took its toll on the 10 men and Cork scored twice in the final minutes to lift the trophy.
Managed by experienced footballer Martin McCann, a recreation supervisor at the Magee Sports Centre, the Magee team has come on leaps and bounds in recent times and the players cannot wait to get their revenge in the Collingwood competition. This time they hope to be the team with their hands on the trophy at the final whistle.
