Tyrone GAA star Peter Canavan and daughter Claire celebrate his receiving the honorary degree of Doctor of the University (DUniv)
at today’s winter graduation ceremony at Coleraine.
Peter Canavan, captain of the 2003 All Ireland champions, Tyrone Gaelic Football team, received the honorary degree of Doctor of the University in recognition of his services to sport today.
He has represented his club and county with distinction for almost fifteen years. He was educated at St Malachy's Primary School in Glencull, St Ciaran's High School in Ballygawley and St Mary's University College, Belfast. He is a teacher in Holy Trinity College in Cookstown and plays club football for Errigal Ciaran.
The younger of the two Canavan brothers who both played for Tyrone, Peter is considered by his fellow players, supporters and commentators to be one of the greatest forwards to have played gaelic football. This year he won a record fifth All Star in addition to his first All Ireland senior medal. He has also won five Railway Cup medals with Ulster, one as captain.
He has won four Ulster Senior titles, two National League titles, three Ulster Under-21 and two All-Ireland Under-21 titles and one Ulster Minor title. He has also represented Ireland in International Rules. At club level he has won two Ulster Championship medals with Errigal Ciaran. As a player he won two all Ireland Vocational Schools in 1988 and 1989 and he managed his school, Holy Trinity College, Cookstown to two Ulster Vocational Schools titles and one All-Ireland title in 1998 and to an All-Ireland Final in 2003.
