Environmental Science Distance Learning Courses Showcased in Brazil
23rd December 2003
Lecturers from the University of Ulster are reaching out to students as far away as South America promoting a unique e-learning course.
The MSc in Coastal Zone Management, offered via distance learning in conjunction with the UKeUniversity, is the only one of its kind in the world and was this week showcased at a conference in Brazil.
Course Director, Dr Andrew Cooper, joined the group in Brazil via videoconference from the UU’s Coleraine campus.
The environmental studies distance-learning courses are delivered via the internet and have already recruited students from across the globe.
The coastal zone management course is the first of its kind and was developed in response to the growing awareness of the need for integrated management of the world's fragile coastlines.
“Its appeal lies largely in its' flexibility; course material can be accessed at any time convenient to the candidate and is therefore attractive to candidates already in employment in the coastal management field, seeking to further their knowledge and gain a higher level qualification”, said Dr Cooper.
"Distance learning really allows us to make the expertise of the coastal research group available world wide, as our recent graduates from Seychelles and Philippines can testify. It is also a learning experience for UU staff as direct exposure to the real life problems of CZM case studies across the globe, greatly enhances our own understanding of the field.”
