UU Steps Up Anti-Sectarianism Drive

8th October 2003

The University of Ulster is set to take its anti-sectarianism training to a new level of excellence following the award of funding from the Northern Ireland Community Relations Council.

Up to 40 University staff will receive training on how to combat prejudice and sectarianism on and off its campuses.

The award will also fund research into best practice in this field, identifying how other institutions deal with these issues.

Professor Peter Roebuck, Provost of Coleraine campus, who has special responsibility for community relations, said: “Respect for diversity of belief and opinion is of paramount importance in today’s Northern Ireland. The University of Ulster is extremely glad to have received this award, and is grateful for it.

“It will be used to very good effect in further promoting a range of activities already under way to this end, with results that will be beneficial to everyone in the University and to the many outside it with whom we work”.

Anne Monaghan, UU Community Relations Manager, said “The funding of £4,100 will be used in part to train staff to recognise incidents of sectarianism and to understand how and why they happen. We will also be carrying out research into how other institutions deal with this issue and this will help us develop action plans to address the problem.

“We will be seeking further funding to further develop this anti-sectarianism programme both on campus and off campus where our students live.”
