New CD Rom Set To Make Life Easier For Irish Scholars
4th November 2003
A new Irish language dictionary with a difference is set to make life easier for students and academics alike.
Researchers at the University of Ulster are designing a new CD Rom package that acts like a hi-tech dictionary.
Dr Greg Toner from the School of Languages and Literature said: “This new resource will allow students and scholars of the Irish language to use the dictionary in a more creative way. For example, old manuscripts are often damaged and letters can be missing. The CD Rom will come up with a list of possible matches for the damaged word.
“Another unique feature is that a word in the dictionary can be linked to texts on the web to give examples of the context in which the word is used. This is especially useful for early Irish language. Many old Irish tales are only available in the best libraries, but users of the CD Rom will be able to access them online from a web link. This will be a tremendous help to students and researchers around the world who do not have access to good library”.
