Recruitment Begins For Tutoring In Schools Programme
4th November 2003
Students wanting to take part in this year’s Tutoring in School programme should submit their applications by November 28. Around 60 projects have been submitted to the programme by primary, secondary and special needs schools from throughout Northern Ireland and recruitment of potential Student Tutors has begun. The programme has been improved to provide students with a more focused and structured project-based programme. Schools were asked to nominate up to three projects and outline specific aims, a timeframe for completion of the project, expected learning outcomes and the skills or abilities required from the Student Tutor undertaking the project. The Tutoring in Schools programme is open to all students in all faculties. Although applications from students in any year group will be considered, the programme is mainly targeted at students in their second year. Mrs Elaine Wilson, Tutoring in Schools Co-ordinator at the Department of Access and Educational Partnerships at UU Coleraine, said: “The programme is an excellent way for students to improve their interpersonal and communication skills and thereby their employability. The programme is traditionally popular with students wishing to complete a PGCE and undertake a career in teaching, although some students wish to participate simply to improve their personal skills.” Student Tutors will be placed in a primary, secondary or special school for 24-32plus hours over a ten-week period. The placements will commence in the second week of February 2004. Application forms, further details of the programme and a list of available projects can be obtained from:
