Drama Students Take The Stage At Magee
19th November 2003
The new Centre for Creative and Performing Arts at the University’s Magee campus this month stages its first drama production with a ground-breaking play about women and war.
Necessary Targets, tells the story of two American women who go to Bosnia to help their female counterparts confront memories of war and emerge deeply changed themselves.
Author, Eve Ensler, best known for the international smash-hit play The Vagina Monologues, was deeply affected by a visit to Bosnia. The play is based on the stories of the women she met there.
The all female cast, directed by Mark Westbrook, professional director and lecturer in Drama at the University of Ulster, will perform the play for an invited audience on 25th and 26th November with public performances in the New Year.
Mark Westbrook said: “This ground-breaking play has been read in New York by Meryl Streep, Angelica Huston and Calista Flockhart and was performed in Sarajevo with Glenn Close and Marissa Tomei.
“It portrays women who refuse to remain victims or refugees and shows us clearly that women are the heart of their country and without them, their nation cannot heal”.
